THE WORLD'S BALLROOM DANCING CHAMPIONSHIPS

MONDAY, APRIL 26th , 1965

EMPIRE POOL - WEMBLEY - MIDDLESEX

THE EVENTS - by Eric D. Morley

This programme has been designed to cover possibly the greatest series of events held in this country, so that when you read this article you will know that it is being written to cover a span of several weeks.

The first event on the calendar is the Star United Kingdom Amateur Modern Championships and Professional Latin American Championships, which take place at the Lyceum Ballroom, Strand, on Monday, 22nd March. It is followed on Monday, 29th March by the Star United Kingdom Professional Modern and Amateur Latin American Championships. On April 5th are the Amateur Nine Dance Championships. On the following Monday, April 12th, although not a Championship, we will be featuring the first International Eurovision Contest, which will take place between England and Holland, England dancing at the Lyceum in London and Holland in Amsterdam.

With only two weeks rest, the scene then switches to the Empire Pool Wembley, where for the first time, the World's Championships will be staged in this mammoth arena. If any of you are reading this programme before these events, these are occasions which you would not wish to miss, for indications are that a capacity crowd of nearly 10'000 people will watch dancers from all over the world pit their skill in Latin American and Modern Dancing. The dates für these events are shown elsewhere in the programme, but you may also be interested to know that on the Saturday preceeding the World's Championships, i.e., Saturday, 24th April, whilst the dance floor is down, Dance News are holding their Old Time Festival of Youth, another event which is sure to be a sell out.

Not connected with dancing, but just as a matter of interest, on the Sunday between the two events, a gigantic Bingo Rally is being held at the Empire Pool which is a rally for all Mecca Bingo Club members. This will be the largest ever held in the country, with a guaranteed first prize of £ 1'000 and the total prize money could be well in excess of £ 5'000. If any of you wish to personally attend this, you should join the Mecca Bingo Club as soon as possible. Coach parties, as for dancing, are coming from all over the U.K.

Back to dancing - Of the events mentioned above, with the exception of the Professional Nine Dance Championships, which has given way to the Eurovision Contest, all will be televised live by B.B.C. 1, so that millions will enjoy the magnificent spectacle, but they cannot possibly have the same thrill as those who will actually be there. Nevertheless, millions of viewers will one day be able to enjoy the spectacle on coloured television. In the meantime, they will be satisfied by seeing the finest dancers in the World competing.

I should like to thank the London Evening News & Star, who have once again given their name to supporting the Star United Kingdom Championships. Their Editor, Mr. C. Reginald Willis, Director of Associated Newspapers has always been a tremendous follower of Ballroom Dancing and his paper can be recommended to all those who follow the various happenings in the Dancing World; for Mr. Jim McKenzie King features a column on Ballroom Dancing practically every week in the London Evening News.

Finally, our thanks to all the various bodies who supported the Championships from overseas, all the competitors, and to the B.B.C. for televising the events. Without this support, these great Championships, which cost an enormous amount of money to be staged, could not in fact happen. In saying this however, none of us will forget that the greatest contribution of all comes from the readers of this programme - the public - who by their support of such events encourage us to go on and continue to organise these events, which very few countries in the World have the opportunity of witnessing.

British Ballroom Dancing or Ballroom Dancing English Style, as it is commonly known, still sets the pattern throughout the World and our adjudicators and competitors are welcome everywhere.

In thanking the B.B.C., I would like to mention in particular the B.B.C. Producers, Robin Scott and Mary Evans, who will be covering these Dancing Championships. I should also like to take the opportunity of thanking a Producer who will not be present at these events, but who has all through the year been the Executive Producer for the 'Come Dancing' series, which has had its most successful season of all times, I refer to Philip Lewis, and to the various regional producers, who have contributed to Ballroom Dancing programmes and enabled competitors to be portrayed at their very best.
